DEFINE THE ESSENTIAL OILS
One should be cautious: the “quintessence of aromatic plants” are not always natural.
There is an undeniable difficulty of selecting these Essential Oils, formerly known species of plants and the pharmacopoeia requires us to call Essential Oils since 1972, if they are pure and natural.
Also, we should remember some basic, mainly cause of essential oils that are obtained aromatic principles exclusively by distillation with water vapor or phrase (such as citrus fruits, lemons, oranges …) .
The composition of the essential oil and the gasoline plant are different because the distillation involves oxidation and hydrolysis. Hence the importance of distillation conducted at low temperature and low pressure that will allow the essential oil keeping its total aromatic quality.
The steam distillation of water is the oldest method.
To be distilled herbs are placed in a still, under the action of heat, water becomes steam and entraime aromatic molecules contained in plants. This mixture passes through a cooling coil. At the exit, a Florentine vessel separates the Essential Oil of water, the oil is lighter (in general) remains on the surface, the aromatic water used for distillation is separated from the oil, it s is called hydrosol or floral water and contains less than 5% Essential Oil.
Of course, performance depends on each case and can sometimes be extremely low, which justifies the high price of Essential Oils:
So for 1 kg of essential oil should
- 4000 kg to 12,000 kg of lemon balm (which explains why this plant is still cut off)
- 150 kg of lavender flowers
HOW TO DEFINE THE ESSENTIAL OILS
By giving their Latin name that specifies the botanical species and avoids confusion.
- By specifying the part or organ which is derived Essential Oil (root, leaf, flower, seed …).
- By specifying the steam distillation of water, or expression.
- By specifying the active ingredient or chemo type characteristic that gives the major physiological effects.
Example: the thyme of Provence and Spain are rich in phenol (thymol and carvacrol) and therefore more effective but more toxic. (See below)
Giving depth, harmony, pleasure and remarkable world of plants complementarities between aromatic and human world, anthroposophy Rudolf Steiner summarized the action of plants according to this method:
– The roots act on the nervous system,
- Seeds and flowers on the digestive system total
- The leaves on the breath and heart.
Hence the importance of knowing the part of the plant used to be more efficient…
